World Junior Curling Champions
The 2002-03 curling season almost ended early for Marliese Miller and her first-year rink. Instead, they walked off as world Junior champions. After qualifying from the last-chance C event at the provincial junior women's northern playdowns in Meadow Lake, the team from the Nutana Curling Club won the Saskatchewan junior title in Moose Jaw.
At nationals in Ottawa, Miller, lead Chelsey Bell, second Janelle Lemon and third Teejay Surik scored two points in the ninth end and stole two in the 10th to beat Alberta 7-5 in a semifinal. Miller made an open hit-and-stick for two in the 10th to beat Nova Scotia 6-4 in the final.
The next stop for the four University of Saskatchewan students was Films, Switzerland, for the world junior championship. Miller's rink went 11-0 that week. The U.S. had two rocks in the four-foot ring in the 10th end of the final against Canada. With her final shot, Miller removed both stones with an angle raise. Her rink won 5-4.
Bell, Lemon, Surik and Miller were all named all-stars at worlds.
Bob Miller was coach of the World championship Team.
