1986 Canadian Senior Men's Curling Champions
The Saskatoon Nutana team won the Canadian senior men's curling championship in 1986, going through the national finals with a record of 10 wins and one loss.
The Saskatoon team took the first big step when they beat Vern Vallivand and his Regina rink twice on the final day, taking the extra-game final, 7-4, in a tournament played at Unity.
With the nationals being played at Yorkton for the first time, Frank's team opened on a strong note, stealing on both the ninth and 10th ends to beat Newfoundland, 6-5. They suffered their only loss during the third draw, losing to three-time Canadian defending champion Lloyd Gunlaggson of Manitoba, 11-8. From there, the momentum swung in Saskatchewan's favor. They built their record to four and one on the third day and to six and one on the fourth day, stealing three on the 10th to take one from Northern Ontario, 7-5. While their rivals were collapsing, Frank's team won two more on the second last day to build their record to eight wins and a loss and take over first place. They won twice on the last day, including the clinching 9-5 victory over Alberta. They finished in a blaze of glory, stealing two on the ninth and then putting so much pressure on Alberta that they stole three on the 10th. Dr. Joe Golumbia received a bonus when he was named the all-star third during the tournament.
