2000 DBJ Leasing Women’s SoftballNothing was something for DBJ Leasing, a senior women’s softball team in Saskatoon.

DBJ didn’t allow a run in four of its six games in the preliminary round at the 2000 Canadian championship in Saint John, N.B.

Take the Willowdale Spartans of Ontario. They sent 18 hitters to the plate against DBJ’s Carla Agarand. Nothing doing. She struck out 13.

Agarand kept bringing the heat for DBJ. She pitched three consecutive shutouts in the playoffs. In DBJ’s first playoff game, she had back-to-back strikeouts with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to defeat the undefeated Oshawa Merchants 1-0. In DBJ’s second playoff game, she had a four-hitter in a 1-0 win against defending champion Winnipeg Smitty’s. In the final, Agarand had a two-hitter, Jacquie Scarlett an RBI triple and Karen Thull a solo home run as DBJ defeated Smitty’s 2-0 for the title.

Saskatoon had experience. Jan Hiebert was DBJ’s coach since its start in 1996, when the green but keen team placed fourth at nationals.

Saskatoon had the long ball. Thull hit five homers for the week.

Saskatoon had Stacey Dansereau and Beth Davis, who fit the outfield like a glove.

Saskatoon had pitching. Agarand played in eight of its 11 games.

Saskatoon had defence. Catcher Lesley Attwell of B.C., who was DBJ’s only out-of-province addition to the lineup, was named a championship all-star.

Later that summer, Attwell was one of 12 athletes at the Canadian championship who competed in softball in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Shortstop Jacki Nichol, Attwell’s teammate with DBJ, was Canada’s captain.

The Saskatoon's DBJ Leasing women's softball team secured victory at the 2000 Canadian Championships through a powerful combination of teamwork, determination, perseverance. Their success was built on a strong foundation of collaboration, where each player contributed to the team's goals. Every challenge was met with determination, as the team pushed through adversity with focus and resilience, ultimately earning the national title through their collective effort and relentless pursuit of excellence.
