1996 Vanier Cup Champions
The University of Saskatchewan posted a record of seven wins and one loss as they finished first in the Canada West football conference in 1996. They beat University of British Columbia 37-16 to win the West playoff and then beat Guelph 33-9 in the Churchill Bowl national semi-final.
They went on a 31-point spree during the second half to beat St. Francis Xavier X-Men 31-12 to capture the 1996 Vanier Cup, emblematic of Canadian university football supremacy.
Quarterback Brent Schneider was voted the game's outstanding player for the second time in his career, throwing for 237 yards and three touchdowns. Jaret Rennie scored two touchdowns and David Murza scored one as part of the offensive output. Cornerback Mike Stewart had a 51-yard interception return for another Huskies touchdown.
Linebacker Warren Muzika was voted the game's most outstanding defensive player.
Brian Towriss was head coach of the Huskies, achieving his second Vanier Cup victory.
