Canadian Fire Fighter's Curling Champions
Doug Wyatt of Saskatoon skipped a Saskatoon team to a third appearance at the Canadian Fire Fighters curling championships in 1970, on the heels of a Canadian title in 1966 and a runner-up finish in 1968.
Wyatt was joined by Archie Bartley ** at third, Lloyd Ramsey ** at second and Stan Sieffert at lead. They won the Saskatchewan title, beating Tom Yick of Saskatoon 7-3 in the A-B final.
At the Canadian Championships at Shawinigan Falls, Que., the race was one of the tightest in years. After seven draws, Northern Ontario led with a six-and-one record while Saskatchewan was one of three teams tied for second with five wins and two losses. The Wyatt team did not lose in the stretch run. They won their last two to tie with Alberta for first place with seven wins and two losses.
In the final, they beat Ron Munro of Albert 8-7. Wyatt scored three on the eighth to tie the score. The teams exchanged singles on the ninth and 10th and Wyatt stole one in the extra end to earn his second national title.
