The Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club has been selected as the sports organization of the year award winner.
The Club was formed in January 1942, with Clarence Downey as the first coach. Instruction was given to skaters between the ages of 10 and 18 every Saturday morning at Victoria, City Park and Avenue F playgrounds. The Lions have been sponsors since 1944. The current oval, named after Downey, was developed for the 1971 Canada Winter Games.
Seven club members have represented Canada at the Winter Olympics, including Catriona LeMay Doan, who won gold in 1998 and 2002.
