Ron's first involvement with hockey started in 1964 as a coach for a Saskatoon Juvenile A Club Team. In 1966 his dedication and interest in the game lead to his being selected as assistant coach and manager of the Saskatoon Centennial Midgets. Representing the Province, the Centennials won the Bronze medal at the National Championships in Kingston.
Elected treasurer of the Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association in its first year (1968), Ron remained an executive member until 1982. Ron was also the vice-president in 1973 and then president from 1974-77 of the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association. In 1977 Ron was elected as the vice-president of senior/intermediate hockey for the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.
In 1978 the Blade Booster Club honoured Ron as "Mr. Minor Hockey"; in 1979 he won the CP Air/C.A.H.A Executive of the Year Award. In 1984 he was selected the Kinsmen Sportsman of the Year.
