Mark Loehndorf is that guy.
You know, the guy in the background who plans and organizes. The guy who manages. The guy who takes care of details. As a teacher by profession, Loehndorf knows you have to do your homework.
He has coached softball for 30 years. He started in the Saskatoon Minor Softball League in the Confederation Park community. He moved to the Phantom zone, winning five city titles in different age groups. He has been in the Saskatoon Amateur Softball Association since 2003, coaching junior and senior men and senior women. He led the Saskatchewan boys’ team to a silver medal in the Western Canada Summer Games.
Loehndorf has coached wrestling since 1981, including being the head coach of the high school program at E.D. Feehan and Bishop James Mahoney for a combined 26 years. He was the first coach of the Pups program with the Saskatoon Wrestling Club.
He has coached high school football at Feehan and Walter Murray, Bishop Mahoney and Holy Cross.
When Loehndorf isn’t in the dugout he’s on the diamond, holding coaching clinics, helping softball coaches get their certification. He’s up in the scorebox, working with the media. He did a daily newsletter for 17 national softball championships and two world championships in Saskatoon. He’s out and about, meeting with colleagues on the SASA executive to talk shop and do behind the scenes softball stuff.
If he’s not coaching outside the wrestling mat, he’s on it, officiating.
Loehndorf was a two-sport athlete. In his senior year at Feehan, he played on both sides of the line for Trojans when they finished second at provincials. He was second in his weight class at high school wrestling provincials.
Wrestling for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, he beat the heavyweight favourite by pin to win the conference title and was second at nationals.
