Multiple Sports
Dave Elder walks back and forth on a football field's sideline in September. He sits on the edge of the wrestling mat in a school gym in January. He stands near the pole vault standard at the track in June. Typical Elder, not just in a year, but throughout his career as a math teacher and coach at Holy Cross High School. For him 1983 is 1993, 2003 is 2013. He talks and listens. He leads and learns.
Elder coached defensive backs in football. He was the head coach of the boys and girls wrestling teams at Holy Cross for 33 years. He was the school's pole vault coach in track and field. As a season for him ended in one sport, a season started in another. A harvest of city and provincial titles followed. He was especially proud of the 11 Provincial Team Titles that the Holy Cross Wrestling Teams acquired.
Elder was a wrestler in high school. He pole vaulted for the Huskies. He finished fifth in the 10-metre platform at the Canadian senior diving championships. He has gone on to be a coach with the Saskatoon Wrestling Club, developing one of the top programs in the country for wrestlers of elementary and high school age. He has helped coach his son's community soccer team to many Provincial Championships. He is a pole vault official going on 40 years. He has helped to organize major diving events in Saskatoon.
