The Olympics have a silver lining for Randy Smith.

Smith was an assistant captain on the Canadian hockey team that won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. That's the best result ever for a Saskatoon hockey player in Olympic history.

A centre, Smith played on the national team for two years, winning Gold in the World University Games and Bronze in the Goodwill games. He also placed second at the international Spengler Cup in Switzerland and in the World Championship in Finland.

His trophy collection began in 1977 with the city champion pee wee Aces. Next was the city bantam title with the Aces, then the city and provincial midget title, also with the Aces. Smith played for the AAA midget Contacts for a year, the North Battleford Barons in the SJHL, then had three years with the WHL Saskatoon Blades, leading the team in scoring in his final year of juniors.

As a pro, he played in the NHL, AHL , and IHL, as well as in Switzerland, Austria and the United Kingdom.

Smith went on to coach the Swift Current Broncos in the WHL, the Saskatoon Frostbite bantams and the Blazers midgets.
