The last time a Saskatoon rink reached the Brier final was 26 years ago (1988) in Chicoutimi, Que. Eugene Hritzuk was the skip.
Hritzuk and his Nutana Club team of lead Don Dabrowski, second Murray Soparlo, third Del Shaughnessy and fifth Ron Mills were defeated by a point by Alberta's Pat Ryan in the final.
Hritzuk also reached the Brier semifinal three years earlier in Moncton in 1985.
Eugene has been in the provincial Tankard nine times from 1984 to 2008. He has also represented Saskatchewan as a skip at the Canadian seniors championship six times, winning the title in 2008. In 2009 Hritzuk won the world senior championship with his rink of lead Dave Folk, second Verne Anderson and third Kevin Kalthoff.
Hritzuk has also represented Saskatchewan at the Canadian masters championship four times, winning nationals in 2014 with Folk, Anderson and third Jim Wilson.
