Dave began his track career in elementary school where he ran track on the banked indoor oval at the Saskatoon Arena. Later, at Holy Cross High School he became provincial high school champion in hurdles and pole vault.
Dave continued his track career at the University of Saskatchewan and was part of the U of S Team that won the Canadian university men's Track and Field championship in 1987. He also played defensive back for a season on the Huskies football team and was drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Dave twice represented Canada in decathlon in the Pan American junior track and field championships, as well as in dual meets against Britain, the U.S., Denmark, France and Holland.
In 1985, he won the decathlon at the Canada Games in Saint John, N.B. Although a torn hamstring limited his summer training to only three weeks, he set personal bests in seven of the decathlon's 10 events, breaking the Canada Games record with 7,097 points.
