Pat & Ken Turner
Builders (2003)Ken and Pat Turner have served the Saskatoon Y Knots and Swim Saskatchewan as directors, meet organizers and officials for more than 30 years, and quite appropriately, both have been recognized by the Saskatchewan organization with honorary life memberships.
Ken grew up in the Invermay district but moved to Saskatoon during his high school years. He stayed active on the Invermay sports scene, playing both baseball and hockey as a teenager.
Pat was born in North Battleford, moved to Saskatoon at an early age and attended Buena Vista and King George elementary schools and Bedford Road Collegiate.
The two were introduced by friends and were married October 14, 1961.
Little did Pat know, as the young mother of two, and while swimming at Wakaw Lake, that swimming would become a dominant interest in their life.
Pat became involved with the Saskatoon Y-Knots as soon as their children, Brock and Karen, became competitive swimmers. She has been a chaperone for the swim team at Canada Games, was her club's provincial director for four years and became awards chairperson for Swim Saskatchewan in 1980. She was certified as a master official in 1984 and has served at countless meets in Saskatchewan and Western Canada. She later became a Swim Saskatchewan Foundation board member.
Ken has been a meet manager for the Y-Knots, their representative on the Swim Saskatchewan board, and eventually president of Swim Saskatchewan. He became a national director for Swimming Canada and the country's representative on the Commonwealth Games committee. He has been a certified official since 1983 and chair of the Saskatchewan Masters Officials committee from 1986 through 2002. He has worked a number of international games.
Ken was honored for his work as an administrator and official at the 1989 Sask Sport Inc. volunteers award night.
Their recognition as honorary life members with Swim Saskatchewan was a true reflection of their longtime commitment and dedication to the sport.
