CANADIAN SENIOR MEN’S
SOFTBALL CHAMPIONS
The 1994 Rempel Brothers won their own
tournament, July 10, beating Edmonton Merchants, 9-8, in the final on a
ninth-inning home run by Rod Marquardt.
The provincial finals had been rained out. Regina
Wheat City Motors won the first game, 1-0 and Rempel Brothers were
leading, 3-0, in the second game when the rain came. Both teams received
berths into the national tournament. Nationals were held Aug. 28 to
Sept. 4 in Saskatoon, with 16 teams.
The Rempels lineup included Brad Underwood,
Rob Scheller, Clint Pilon, Kevin Garinger, Rod Grose, pitchers; Jim
Climenhaga, Ken Garinger, catchers; Rod Marquardt, first base; Terry
Wallin, second base; Dale Dirks, third base; Ellis Clayton, shortstop;
Gary Siemens, Jason Moline, Colin Abbott, Carey Dirks, Keith Lightbown,
Haley Stamnes, outfielders; Pat Spizawka, Bill Marshall, Peter Clark,
coaches; Bruce Rempel, general manager; Allan Page, Larry Besse,
assistant managers.
This was the third Saskatoon team to win Canadian
men's title.
In pool play, the Rempels beat Winnipeg,
9-0, on a one-hitter by Scheller; beat Edmonton, 9-4; lost 4-0, to the
Toronto Gators; beat Miramachi, 10-1; beat Victoria Payless, 1-0, on a
bases-loaded walk in the first inning; lost to Halifax, 2-1. That
tied the Rempels for first place and in the tiebreaker, they beat
Toronto Gators, 7-5.
In the playoffs, the Rempel Brothers beat
B.C. Regents, 1-0; beat Halifax Keiths, 7-0, in the A side final.
Halifax earned a rematch with the Rempels in the Championship final by
beating Toronto Gators on the B side. In the final the Rempels came out on top of
a 4-0 decision, as Underwood pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
Terry Wallin singled home Colin Abbott, who had tripled, for a run in
the third inning; Dale Dirks homered for a 2-0 lead in the fourth;
Underwood doubled in the fifth and Carey Dirks scored on a
fielder's choice; Jason Moline hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Underwood was 3-0, no earned runs, 33
strikeouts in 19 innings, .750 batting average.
The Rempels used three imports, Underwood,
Abbott, Lightbown, and added Scheller, who lived in Saskatoon but was
playing at Madison, Wisconsin that summer.
