CANADIAN SENIOR MEN’S SOFTBALL CHAMPIONS
The Saskatoon Rempel Brothers senior men’s
softball team was formed in 1985, won the Saskatchewan title in its
first year, and then won the Saskatchewan and Canadian championships in
1987.
They started the 1987 season by winning
major tournaments in Kelowna, Winnipeg and Saskatoon and then captured
the provincial title with three straight twins at Regina.
They
competed at the world tournament at Sioux City, Iowa, in August and
finished a very respectable seventh.
At the Canadian championships in Sarnia,
Ont., they sailed through with seven straight victories, beating Sarnia
2-0 in the final.
Thirteen of the 24 players were homegrown
from Saskatchewan. Nine of the players were selected to Canada’s
national team. They were Dave Paetkau, Jim Cowdry, Jim Jones, Randy
Dutaiume, Dave Hoffman, Rob Scheller, Jay Sim, Len Chanasyk and Ray
Tilley. Larry Besse was team manager, Ken Gunn was
assistant manager, Pete Clark was the head coach and Les Howey and
Wayne Wallace were his assistants.
