C.I.A.U. NATIONAL HOCKEY CHAMPIONS
It was a sweet and
magic moment for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. After suffering
last-minute losses to Moncton in the two previous Canadian finals, the
Huskies gained their Canadian title with a 6-2 victory over Concordia in
the national tournament played at Moncton.
Coming into playoff
action in the spring of 1983, Dave King's Huskies were well prepared.
They finished first in the Canada West Conference, with 16 wins and
eight losses. It was a season in which the top-to-bottom finish in
Canada West, a difference of 16 points, was the closest in 10 years. Willie
Desjardins was the top point-getter during conference play, with 32, but
the team had excellent balance, with six players getting 22 points or
better. Desjardins won the Canada West nomination as player of the year
and the Canada West sportsmanship award. Robin Bartel won the rookie of
the year honors and the duo of Bob Dougall and Owen Felske won the
goaltending award.
In the Canada West
final, the Huskies beat Alberta Golden Bears, 4-1, in the first game and
5-1 in the second game. Tim Hodgson had five points in the series and
both of his goals were tiebreakers.
The Huskies opened up
the national tournament with a 6-2 victory over Brandon and followed it
with a 10-1 victory over Wilfrid Laurier. In the final against
Concordia, the Huskies were in control from start to finish. Desjardins
scored 11 points in Saskatchewan's three games, establishing a new
record for most points in a series at the time. His linemates, Randy
Wiebe and Bruce Keller, each contributed nine points.
Desjardins was named
the tournament's most valuable player and Desjardins and Keller were
named tournament all-stars.
