C.I.A.U. NATIONAL WOMEN’S
VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS
The
University of Saskatchewan Huskiettes achieved a third straight
Canadian Intercollegiate women’s volleyball championship in 1980-81,
a feat which had never been accomplished before by a Canadian
university.
The Huskiettes won the west with a
record of 19 wins and one loss and beat British Columbia in the
Canada West final.
At the nationals in Victoria, many
looked upon Ottawa as the favorite because they carried a number of
national team players. But the Huskiettes won six straight matches,
finishing with a victory over Manitoba, 15-8, 15-81, 12-15 and 15-6.
Melanie Sanford, CIAU All-Canadian for
three straight years, was captain of all three Huskiette teams,
which won the national crowns. Cindy Crowe, Cindy Shepherd, Sherry
Saxton and Joyce Senyk also played on all three teams and Dovona
West played on two and was an assistant coach on the third.
