The
Huskies carried experience and confidence
into the 1970-71 season and, again, they won the West with a victory
over University of British Columbia, 112
points to 99, and they won the Canadian
title by winning the final relay race to beat Manitoba, 89-85.
Team depth really prevailed in the
Canada West 50-metre sprint where Bob
Brennan, Ron Zerr and Lloyd Howey finished one-two-three.
The 1,500-metre relay team of Murray Woodbury, Garth
Hilderman, Rick Bell and Lorne Tarasoff
also shone, winning in a record time of
three minutes, 24.1 seconds.
The national finals were closer than
expected, because Manitoba was allowed to
field a larger team, but, in the end the relay team
of Gordon Waldner, Hilderman, Tarasoff and Woodbury came up
with a gold medal performance.
Bob Kochan contributed by winning the mile and the two mile
events, Charlie Simpson was second in the
mile and Hilderman won the 1,000 metres.
The two Huskie teams set the tone for
a rich University of Saskatchewan history
in track and field, producing 33 Canada
West crowns and 10 Canadian championships over the years.
