Russ dedicated most of
his adult life to the betterment of young people through sport in
Saskatoon. Most of his energies were directed to hockey and while
economic times were tough, McQuarrie continued to coach, manage and
sponsor teams. In the late 1930s and early 1940s he put together a
midget team, called the Dodgers and kept them under his wing for three
years. Russ then moved his club into the junior ranks, retained the name
Dodgers for the 1939-40 season then changed the name to the Quakers. His 1940-41 Quaker team went all the way to the Abbott Cup final before losing out to the Winnipeg Rangers in a tough seven-game series. Four members of the Quakers went on to play in the NHL – Harry Watson, Hal Laycoe, Tony Leswick, and Keith Allen. In addition to hockey, Russ supported Saskatoon’s equestrian program and ParticipACTION. In February of 1983, Russ passed away. In 1968 he was named Kinsmen Sportsman of the Year. |
