Roly was born in
1897 at Indian Head. Later he moved to Saskatoon and became owner and
manager of Birney’s hardware. For years Birney’s was the favourite
gathering spot for sportsmen. He is best known for his community
service and contributions to amateur sport development. In recognition
of his many contributions, Roly was made an honorary life member of the
Saskatchewan Amateur Softball Association and the Saskatoon Hilltop
football club.
His organizational
ability was evident in the success of the annual Saskatoon Exhibition
Baseball Tournament during the 1940s, 1950s and the early 1960s. Not
only was he generous with his time, but also his money. Roly was the
recipient of the first Kinsmen Sportsmen of the Year award in 1961. In
1974, he was selected to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and in
1985 was inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame.
