Ned Powers
General (1997)

Ned Powers has been contributing to the Saskatoon sports scene as a journalist since 1953.

Ned was born in Edmonton on March 14, 1930, grew up in the Peace River country and moved to Regina in 1943. He covered high school sports while a student at Scott Collegiate and joined the Regina Leader-Post on a full-time basis in 1949.

He joined the StarPhoenix in 1953, moved to CFQC radio and television in 1960 and returned to the StarPhoenix in 1965. He became editor of the Saskatoon Sun in 1990 where he launched his sports profile series, Then and Now.

Ned has been a volunteer with baseball, track and field, curling and bowling organizations and has been a director of the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame. In 1991, he was honored as a Friend of the Hilltops and in 1993, was honored with a special merit award from the Dairy Producers Fitness Foundation.

He has written three sports history books: Behind the Sports Headlines in 1992, Strikes ‘n Spares, the History of Saskatchewan Bowling in 1993 and Personal Best, the history of Saskatchewan track and field in 1997.
