At the age of 16, as a youth in North
Battleford, Ken started his career in softball and curling. He played on
the senior men’s team and skipped a rink in the schoolboy northern
playdowns.
He became associated with the Saskatoon
Merchants softball club and held many executive positions. In 1961 and
1962 the Merchants were provincial champions. For several years he was
chairman of the annual Merchants tournament and when his playing days
were over in 1962, Ken looked for new areas to lend his support. He
coached minor softball and worked with the Saskatchewan Amateur Softball
Association.
In curling, Ken has been a member of the Hub
city club since 1958. He has served in every capacity and has chaired
several committees including the Bond Bonspiel. He holds a life
membership in the Hub City club and was the Kinsmen Sportsman of the
Year in 1986. He has represented the Hub on the Saskatoon Men’s Curling
Association and was a member of the Saskatoon Bid committee that
successfully brought the Brier to Saskatoon in 1989.
His work
as a builder in softball and curling led to his induction into the
Saskatoon Hall of Fame. |
