Irene Mackenzie came out of Saskatoon’s
Riverside Golf and country Club to become a two-time president and
six-year executive with the Canadian Ladies golf Association.
Irene was a longtime member at Riverside,
playing in club, city and provincial championships and serving as
captain and vice-captain at the club. She also assisted in organizing
the Holiday Park Ladies’ section.
Irene was elected to the Saskatchewan branch
of the CLGA in 1964, served as its president in 1967-68 and led the
drive for more junior and rural participation in the provincial
championship events.
She was named
president of the Canadian Association in 1967 when the national finals
were played at Riverside.
In 1969, she was
elected to the national executive, in 1972 became the first
vice-president to be elected from outside of Ontario and was elected
president in 1973-74. On the national board, she promoted the move of
headquarters from Toronto to Ottawa, helped revise the national
constitution and worked towards more competitions for juniors and
seniors.
She was non-playing
captain of the 1971 Commonwealth team in a tournament at New Zealand and
was a delegate to the Commonwealth tournament in England in 1975. She
was a finalist for the Air Canada amateur sports award in 1975. |
