Gil was born in
Saskatoon, October 29, 1920. He is remembered as an athlete and a
builder. He played six sports during his high school years.
He played in the
Saskatoon Senior Men’s basketball league, played on five provincial
championship teams and winning the scoring title and most valuable
player honours two years in a row. For 22 years, Gil was a centre
fielder in the Senior “A” softball league. During that time his teams
won five Saskatchewan championships plus a Western Canada title in
1948. He won the batting championship in 1950 and was selected several
times to the All-Star team. Strumm has also been active in curling (35
years) and golf (six years).
As a builder, Gil
has been involved with basketball, softball, football, baseball, hockey
and curling. He coached in two world softball tournaments in 1953 in
Toronto and 1970 in Osaka, Japan. As a recipient of several awards,
Gil was selected as the Kinsmen Sportsman of the year in 1969. Strumm was
the recipient of the Queen’s Medal in 1977.
He was inducted
into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
