Jay Sim, a Saskatoon catcher, shared in one
of Canada's greatest moments in international softball, playing on the
1992 team which won the world championship at Manila in the Philippines.
And when he decided to retire that day in March, Jay put
a fitting finish to a career in which he went to three Canadian finals
as a junior, 11 Canadian playoffs as a senior and
played five years in Softball
Canada’s program.
Jay played five seasons with the Imperial
400 juniors, winning the Canadian championship in St. John’s,
Newfoundland in 1978.
As a senior, Jay missed playing on a
Saskatchewan champion only once in 12 years. He played on four
Saskatchewan teams which finished second at the nationals, two others
which finished third and the big win came in 1987 when Saskatoon Rempel
Bros beat Sarnia 2-0 at the Canadian final in Calgary.
Jay played for Canada's gold medal team at
the Pan-American Games in 1987, Canada's team which won the Challenge
Cup in Saskatoon in 1988, Canada's team which won gold at the
Pan-American qualifying trials in 1990 and Canada's gold medal team at
the Pan-American Games in 1991.
In the
1992 tournament at Manila, Canada trailed, 3-0, against New Zealand,
rallied to tie the score in the fifth and won 5-3 in the eighth inning. |
