Bob Reindl was a championship track athlete in various age groups,
capping off his competitive career with five appearances for Canada in
international competitions.
Bob was born in Saskatoon on Sept. 30,
1958. One of his early interests was hockey. It was while attending a
Junior Cadet camp in Vernon, B.C., where he ran in the 800 meters, that
his spark for track and field was lit.
Bob competed in high school meets for four
years, setting a new provincial junior record in the 800m in 1975,
setting a new provincial senior record in the 800m and also winning the
400m in 1976. He was a member of the Riversdale Track and Field Club
where Brian Clark was his coach.
Bob was chosen to represent Saskatchewan at
the 1975 Western Canada Summer Games in Regina then in 1979 and 1983. His best finish was 2nd in 1979 in the 800m in Saskatoon. He attended
the 1977 Canada Summer Games in Newfoundland where he won the 800m tying
the meet record and finished 3rd in the 1500m.
Bob had a particular flair for the Knights
of Columbus Saskatchewan Indoor Games, notably in 1977 when he upset the
Americans in the invitational 1,000m race setting a new Saskatchewan
Indoor Record in the process and again in 1978 when he won the
invitational 800 meters. He was voted Saskatchewan Athlete of the Meet
for both years.
Bob won the 800m at the Canadian Senior
Championships in 1977 and a Bronze in 1978 and went on to represent
Canada at the Pacific Conference Games in Australia in 1977. He won the
800m in California in a Tri-Country match against the USA and Japan in
1977. He toured Europe in 1979 competing in England, Germany and Italy.
